We all know that COVID-19 has been difficult for local businesses. The restrictions have devastated many small businesses and some have been forced to close their doors. How can you help? The best way to do something is by spending your dollars at your favorite local businesses this holiday season. Show your favorite local shops that you are thankful for their services by spending your money with them.

The big corporations are not necessarily hurting during this time. In fact, most of their revenue is up this year.

Amazon: profit up 100%

Target: profit up 80%

Walmart: profit up 80%

Lowe's: profit up 74%

Microsoft, Facebook, Apple, Google: stock at record high

Small businesses: 21% have closed; 30% down in revenue.

One of Extreme Community Makeover's favorite small businesses was The Studios at Overland Crossing. We held our annual fundraiser at this event center two years in a row. Sadly, this year, they had to close their doors. They couldn't remain open with the COVID restrictions. This event space provided a venue for weddings, non-profit events, corporate parties, and other events needing a venue.

The event center is located in South Denver at 2201 South Delaware Street. It was a historic warehouse in a 100 year old building that was repurposed into an urban and sustainable studio and event space. The building was renovated by artist John Zahourek and re-opened for business in 2012.

We wish the staff at The Studios at Overland Crossing all the best as they transition into a new chapter.

Take note of your favorite local shops. Think of how you can support them. We bet you can find a way to spend your dollars there, whether for Christmas presents, food, supplies, etc. Enjoy your holiday season and support local businesses!
