Extreme Teams Spotlight : Jean

Jean Johnston - Neighborhood Team

What is your story about how you got involved in Extreme Community Makeover?

I actually heard about ECM before I ever got involved. I was first introduced to Angela and ECM back in 2014. In the summer of that year, I had a church group coming to Denver who wanted some meaningful ways to volunteer while they were here. Someone mentioned Extreme Community Makeover as an option, and we reached out to get the ball rolling. I was impressed by how well organized and coordinated all their service days were. The actual week was fun and meaningful and even included some work to my own home, which was on the block that week.

Why are you on the Neighborhood Team?

After that first experience, I knew I wanted to be more involved on a regular basis. Not just because I live in one of the neighborhoods where ECM serves (Elyria Swansea), but because I’ve seen first hand how ECM builds connections and community in practical ways. The Neighborhood Team was a natural fit because I actually live here and am a stakeholder in my neighborhood. I’m glad ECM exists and grateful for all the work we do in my own community. I believe connection and community are so vital to thriving.

What do you enjoy most about being the team leader?

I’ve loved getting to connect with neighbors and to creatively think about different ways to leverage Work Days for lasting good past the day itself.

What is a memorable experience from an ECM Work Day?

There have been many! They all involve neighbors interacting with volunteers - working together, sharing food or cold drinks, and even stories being shared.

If you had one sentence to describe what ECM is about, what would you say?

Building community through practical service.

Anything else would you like to share?

I’m glad to be part of ECM and look forward to future Work Days!
