Checking Things Off the List

Alarm set, check. Coffee, check. Arrive at ECM workday location, check. Angela speech, check. Set-up Command Center, check.  Interview people for blog, check.  Ever feel like your day is all about checking things off the list, stuck in autopilot and you’re just not feeling it? That is how my day began this workday. I know, not very inspirational, and I wasn’t very motivated.  I don’t like showing up with this kind of energy.  I sent out my call to the universe for help.  I needed to feel, to know, to witness the compassion, the kindness, the good action of others. I needed a spiritual boost.  It didn’t take long for the call to be answered.

Feeling numb, I set out on foot walking amongst the homes in the neighborhood Extreme Community Makeover was serving in that day. The warm fall weather felt wonderful; already my spirits were beginning to rise. My first stop was amongst volunteers from Colorado Home Realty. I love how the universe conspires to help once a request is made. I struck up a conversation with Micky, an employee with Colorado Home Realty. Micky brought her two young sons to participate. She said, she felt it was important to instill helping others while children were still young. I asked her where she obtained her ethics regarding serving others; she said her parents and Girl Scouts.  She said she was a lifer with Girl Scouts.

As it so happens this one stop gave me my boost and my inspiration for the blog.  Micky said, what she loved most about working for Colorado Home Realty was the company culture. One of Colorado Home Realty’s focus was volunteering…helping others to live their best life.  The behavior amongst she and her co-workers/friends was to do wellness checks on each other and for their families. Often, through word of mouth, they will reach out to someone in the community. Volunteering for this company is not just one day in the year, but an every day way of life….helping people to live their best life is certainly a wonderful example of how we can make our communities, our cities, our world a better place to live and to demonstrate kindness, compassion, service, peace and love.
