Communications Team Blog Post : April 10

This pandemic has prevented a lot of events from happening and many are only returning now. But Extreme Community Makeover (ECM) never slowed down. Last year we had plenty of practice social distancing and completing projects in a safe manner, so everyone was more than ready to start a new season of outdoor neighborhood and home improvement projects on April 10th. The Chaparral High School Boys Lacrosse Team, Community Coalition of Barnum, and some individuals were clearly ready for a productive day of building and maintaining community. The group of almost 100 volunteers completed eleven house projects and cleaned two parks in the Barnum neighborhood. It was a great start to the new year of Work Days!

Community Participation

The Community Coalition of Barnum worked in Barnum Park around the water of Barnum Lake. Group leader Kaye said, “we see this effort as a start! The Weir Gulch deposits trash into the lake so we would also love to encourage recycling, reducing single use plastics and installation of more trash and recycling vessels throughout the neighborhood.”

During the pandemic, many people have been feeling lonely and disconnected. It was great seeing so many people being able to interact outdoors, helping neighbors in Denver. Signing up for a Work Day is a great way for people to reconnect to each other and their broader Denver community. As it continues to get warmer, ECM will have plenty of work to do at houses, alleys, and parks in Barnum, West Colfax, Villa Park, Westwood, La Alma/Lincoln Park, Globeville, Elyria, and Swansea.
